Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my data kept?
We have partnered with Amazon.com's Web Services Simple Storage Services. This means that your data is hosted on the exact same servers that Amazon.com's website is! They have multiple data centers throughout the world storing their, and now your, data. This ensures that your data is kept securely, reliably, and efficiently. All of your data is encrypted before leaving your computer so neither DatSure or Amazon.com can ever see your data.

Will the backup work if I have a firewall?
Yes. DatSure Remote Backup was designed to be firewall friendly. We use the same ports that your web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox) use so as long as you can surf the web you can backup your data.

How secure is my data?
Your data coming from your computer for backup via DatSure Remote Backup is compressed and encrypted before leaving your PC. Data is stored at the data centers in this encrypted form. We use the the same U.S. Government encryption standard (AES 128) to secure your data both to and from your computer.

Can anyone else access my data?
No. Unless someone has downloaded our software and you have given them your username and password there is currently no way to access your data.

Do backups have versioning?
No. In the first release of DatSure Remote Backup we have not yet implemented versioning as it's not a priority feature for the vast majority of our customers. However, we do plan to add this in a future version.
Are backups scheduled?
Yes. DatSure Remote Backup will scan your computer every hour for files that have changed.

Will it slow down my PC?
No. DatSure Remote Backup uses a low priority thread to scan your selected directories for changed files. This happens only once per hour and only takes a few moments to complete. Durning this time you will most likely not notice any impact on your machine.

What if the backup is interrupted?
DatSure Remote Backup will automatically and gracefully recover if interrupted. If you disconnect from the internet or turn off your computer DatSure Remote Backup will continue where it had left off.

What if I have a dial-up connection?
No problem! DatSure Remote Backup data is compressed, incremental, and interruptible. This ensures that even on a dial-up connection your backups will continue successfully. Even if it's your first backup (seeding) and you have a lot of data it will eventually complete. You will find that after your first backup things go very quickly; even on a slow modem.

What folders should I backup?
When you first install our software you will be walked through an initial setup wizard. Durning this wizard you will find that some directories have been preselected (suggested) for you. They are things like My Documents, Desktop, Favorites, Outlook, etc. You can of course uncheck any of those if necessary or add additional custom file/folder selections. These can also be changed anytime in the future via the software interface. Our software is designed to backup only data and not your entire hard drive.

Can I backup more then one PC?
Yes. There is no charge no matter how many computers or users are backing up under your account. You only pay for the storage you use. Durning the setup wizard you will be asked what you want to name the computer. So you can put in something like "Andrea's Computer" and on a second computer you can put in something like "Rick's Computer". This will keep the files seperate from each other but allow them to be billed on the same account.

What operating systems are supported?
Microsoft Windows 98/ME/200/XP/Vista. We do not have a client for either Linux or Mac but you could map a drive to a location on such machines as our software will support any data format.

How easy is it to restore a file?
Super simple! Just right-click DatSure Remote Backup's icon at the bottom of your screen (or use the main interface) and click restore. You can then navigate to the file/folder you want to store and then click restore.

How is my bill calculated?
Your bill will be calculated as a monthly average of your daily storage usage. If you delete something part way through the month it will be factored into the average.
